Biography:

Innkeeper (Crofter according to census reports). Report in the Ross-shire Journal of 9 June 1876: A Hardy Old Highlander – At the Strathcarron Market yesterday we (Inverness Advertiser) came into contact with as genuine a specimen of the hardy Highlander as we believe can be seen in any part of the north. We refer to Donald MacKenzie, Innkeeper, Applecross. The distance between Applecross and Strathcarron is 20 miles, and MacKenzie, who has seen the snows of ninety –two winters, travelled that distance without the least signs of fatigue, and he informed us that he would have no difficulty in travelling the same distance back. He was born and brought up on the estate, has seen nineteen proprietors of Applecross, four of Gairloch, and five of Raasay. He is the only man now living, we believe, who has seen and talked with William Ross, the Gairloch bard. He is still hale and hearty, and full of characteristic Highland spirit” . This Donald’s son Roderick (Ruairidh Dhòmhnaill) was the last innkeeper in Milltown before Lord Middleton removed the licence to sell alcohol when some of the crew of the estate boat ‘Passing Cloud’ got drunk when they were supposed to go to sea. Ruairidh Dhòmhnaill was also th eregistrar of births, deaths and marriages.
